A Geely EX5 owner in Wyndham Vale needed a FoxESS EV charger his original installer couldn't supply for weeks. We solved a tight townhouse cable run and had him charging from solar.

The problem

A Wyndham Vale homeowner had just had solar and a FoxESS battery installed by another company, but they couldn't supply or fit his FoxESS EV charger and quoted a three-week wait. In the meantime he was paying to charge his Geely EX5 at public DC fast chargers. He came to us wanting it done that week.

The brief was to install a charger that worked with the equipment already in place and avoid a longer delay before home charging was available.

Single-phase, and a car that wants 11kW

His Geely EX5 can accept up to 11kW AC, but 11kW needs three-phase supply and his townhouse is single-phase. Rather than sell a charger he couldn't use at full speed, we fitted a single-phase FoxESS charger delivering up to 7kW (32A), which adds around 40km of range an hour, plenty for overnight charging.

It pairs with his existing FoxESS inverter and battery, so solar, battery and car charging all run in one app. We considered the vehicle's charging capability alongside the home supply, choosing a setup matched to what the townhouse could support.

The tricky part: a townhouse with no easy cable path

Townhouses leave little room to run charger conduit. There was no simple route, so cables had to pass through the wall cavity. We planned the run, kept it neat along the meter box and external wall, and finished it to a tidy, compliant standard.

Careful routing mattered here: the aim was to connect the charger to the existing electrical setup while keeping the conduit path as unobtrusive as the townhouse layout allowed.

Set up to charge from solar and off-peak

He also wanted the charger to prioritise his solar surplus and off-peak hours rather than draining his home battery. We set the FoxESS app so the car charges from solar when it's generating, tops up on off-peak grid rates, and leaves the battery for the house.

That gives the household a way to make use of its own solar when available, while also scheduling charging around off-peak electricity. The battery remains available for household use, in line with the customer’s stated preference.
