We install all ten leading battery brands, and we're not here to sell you the biggest box. The right battery matches your evening usage, your existing inverter, and your budget.
Most "best battery" lists rank brands by brochure specs. That's not how we think about it. After installing batteries across Melbourne's west, the right battery isn't the one with the biggest number, it's the one that matches your evening usage, your existing inverter, and your budget. A premium battery on the wrong setup wastes money. A well-sized mid-tier battery on the right home pays for itself years faster.
We install all ten leading brands in Australia, so we've no reason to push you toward one. Here's how they actually compare, and where each one fits.
| Brand | Best for | Usable capacity | Warranty | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Tesla Powerwall 3 | Whole-home backup, all-in-one simplicity | 13.5 kWh (stackable) | 10 yr | Built-in hybrid inverter means fewer parts and a clean install. Fixed size suits homes whose evening use lands near 13.5kWh. The app and backup performance are the benchmark others chase. Premium price, but the integration earns it. |
GoodWe Lynx Home | Best value on a new GoodWe inverter system | Modular, ~6–16 kWh+ | 10 yr | Lowest cost per kWh of any quality battery we fit, if you're installing a GoodWe inverter alongside. Tier 1 maker, growing fast in Australia. Our default value pick for a full new solar + battery install. |
FoxESS ECS | Value + modular expansion | Modular, ~5.2 kWh blocks | 10 yr | Very close to GoodWe on price per kWh, with easy expansion later. Strong choice if you want to start smaller and add capacity as your usage grows or an EV arrives. |
Sigenergy SigenStor | EV owners, future-proofing | Modular, ~5–48 kWh | up to 15 yr | The smart pick if you have or plan an EV. Modular, built-in inverter, strong warranty, and the most capable energy management we install. Premium, but genuinely future-proof. |
Sungrow SBR/SBH | Lowest cost per kWh, new installs | Modular, ~9.6 kWh+ | 10 yr | Excellent value when installed with a Sungrow hybrid inverter. Reliable, widely installed, modular sizing. A workhorse for cost-conscious new systems. |
AlphaESS SMILE | Balanced value + local support | Modular | 10 yr | Solid all-rounder with a strong Australian support network, which matters more than people think when a warranty claim comes years later. Good middle-ground option. |
SolaX Power | Flexible retrofits | Modular | 10 yr | Flexible, works across a range of setups, competitive pricing. A practical option for certain retrofit situations. |
Franklin WH | Whole-home backup alternative | ~13.6 kWh | up to 12 yr | Strong backup capability and a growing reputation. Worth considering against Tesla for whole-home backup. |
Enphase IQ Battery | Existing Enphase / microinverter homes | Modular, ~5 kWh blocks | 15 yr | The natural, and often only sensible, choice if you already run Enphase microinverters. Longest warranty on the market. AC-coupled, so it retrofits to almost any system. |
Anker SOLIX | Budget-conscious entry | Modular | 10 yr | Newer to Australia, aggressive pricing. An entry option where budget is the main driver. |

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program takes roughly $250 to $310 off every usable kWh, applied instantly on your quote, no paperwork on your end. On a typical 10kWh battery that's around $2,500 to $3,000; on a 13.5kWh Powerwall 3, roughly $3,400 to $4,200. The rebate is richest on the first 14kWh and tapers above that, which is exactly why we size to your usage rather than sell you the biggest box. It steps down again on 1 January 2027, so installing before then locks in the bigger discount. We confirm your exact figure at quote.
*Discount of around 30% is based on your battery's usable capacity and the small-scale technology certificates (STCs) it's eligible for under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Subject to eligibility under the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001, including installation by an accredited installer and connection to new or existing solar. The exact amount varies by battery size and certificate value, and is confirmed in your quote. Batteries up to 14kWh receive the full rate; larger systems are tapered. The incentive reduces over time until 2030. Learn more at the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (dcceew.gov.au).
Your evening usage decides the right size. Oversizing means exporting cheap power you paid to store; undersizing means running flat by 9pm.
Some batteries need their own brand's hybrid inverter (GoodWe, Sungrow); others (Enphase, some AC-coupled units) retrofit to almost anything. This often makes the decision for you.
If blackout protection is a priority, that shifts the shortlist.
A 15-year warranty means nothing if the brand exits Australia. We factor in who'll actually be around to honour it.
We're Tesla and Enphase certified installers and SAA accredited, rated 5.0 from 47 Google reviews. The licensed electrician who quotes your job is the one who installs it, no call centres, no subcontractor lottery. We live and work in Melbourne's west.
I recently had a FoxESS battery system installed by G Gill Electricals and am very happy with the experience. The installation was clean, tidy, and completed to a high standard. Everything was well organized, and the attention to detail was evident throughout the process. The team took the time to explain the system in detail, including how it operates and how to get the best performance from it. They were professional, punctual, and easy to deal with from start to finish. If you're considering a battery installation, I'd be happy to recommend G Gill Electricals based on my experience.
