Battery retrofit assessment

Add a battery to your existing solar system

Already have solar? We assess your inverter, array, switchboard and household priorities before recommending a battery. If your existing equipment is compatible, you may be able to keep it; if it needs changing, we’ll explain why and quote that work separately.

What a battery retrofit costs

Adding a battery to existing solar starts from $3,499 inc GST for a 15kWh Sofar, or from $5,990 inc GST for a 27.84kWh FoxESS, where your current inverter is compatible. If the inverter needs replacing, that's quoted separately after we assess it.

*From-prices inc GST and federal battery discount; final price confirmed in your written quote.

These are starting prices, not a promise that every property can use the same equipment or scope. The final quote reflects compatibility, cabling, electrical work and any inverter change required. We check the installation details before confirming the exact price so the quote is clear about included equipment and work.

AC-coupled or DC-coupled?

AC-coupled: add storage alongside

An AC-coupled battery connects on the home’s AC side and works alongside your existing solar inverter. When that inverter is compatible, this can let you keep the equipment you already have.

DC-coupled or hybrid inverter: update the conversion

A DC-coupled battery connects with a compatible hybrid inverter. This route can suit older or incompatible equipment, or a system that needs an inverter swap. We confirm which arrangement fits your inverter before quoting.

The distinction is about how solar, battery and household power are connected—not simply which battery brand you choose. For a deeper walkthrough of AC and DC coupling, compatibility and the questions to ask, read our full battery retrofit guide.

Will my inverter work with a battery?

We check the inverter make, model, age and operating condition against the battery’s compatibility requirements. We also review the solar array, switchboard, planned battery location, household demand and any backup or future EV-charging priorities. Those details determine whether your present inverter can stay, whether an additional interface is required, or whether a replacement system is the better fit.

We commonly assess retrofit options around equipment from brands such as GoodWe, Sungrow, Fronius, Solis and Enphase. Compatibility depends on the specific model and system configuration, so a brand name alone is not enough to confirm a match. If you can share clear photos of the inverter label, switchboard and any monitoring display, that helps us prepare the assessment.

Battery retrofit FAQs

Can I add a battery to any solar system?

Not every existing system can accept every battery. We check the inverter model, solar array, switchboard and property setup to confirm compatible options and the work required.

How much does it cost to add a battery?

Current starting prices are $3,499 inc GST for a 15kWh Sofar where the existing inverter is compatible, or $5,990 inc GST for a 27.84kWh FoxESS on compatible equipment. Final pricing depends on assessment; any inverter replacement is quoted separately.

Do I have to replace my inverter?

No. If your existing inverter is compatible and suitable, an AC-coupled battery may be added while keeping it. An older or incompatible system may need a hybrid inverter or replacement; we check first and explain the cost.

Which batteries do you install?

We assess options from brands including Sofar, FoxESS and Tesla, among others, against your inverter compatibility, storage needs, backup preferences and budget.

Is the battery rebate still available?

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is available under current program rules and is scheduled to reduce from 1 January 2027. Eligibility and the applicable amount depend on the system and current rules; see our battery rebate page for current details.
